How to Become a Socially Lean, Mean Link Building Machine

As a florist, the web has been a vital tool in the success of my business.

But like most small businesses, I don’t have a large advertising budget.

So when it comes to promoting my website, building links to it has always been a priority for me.

What’s changed for me is the way I build links now. I focus on creating content that will naturally attract backlinks. Most of the content is from images, most of which are my own.

I recently saw the infographic pictured here that compares the old-school way of link building with what’s currently working today.

You might think that this only applies to “content marketers” or bloggers, not those of us who sell tangible products and services, like flowers.

But if you have a website, you have content. And you need to continually build links to that content to strengthen your website’s search presence.

I recently came across a great link building video from Brian Dean, the founder of Backlinko.

It changed how I thought about “content” and how I use it to build links today. It will do the same for you.

I routinely utilize several link-building methods in the video and have tried all but two of them.

Link Building That’s Working for Me

Like many businesses that sell products, the floral business is very image-oriented. So I share a lot of photos of our shop’s work. Social media sites like Pinterest and Instagram have worked best to share my images.

Whether working in the shop or online, I also spend much time interacting with customers, suppliers, and coworkers.

Many of the questions I am asked become the subject of blog posts or shared through our other social media sources, like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

The same applies to the answers to a question I’ve asked or advice I’ve heard. So it’s unlikely I will ever run out of things to share.

I use these two main ways to build links and increase my search presence. It may not sound easy, but don’t overthink it. It’s not rocket science.

It’s more challenging filtering through it all to find the best stuff to share.

Whatever you choose to share, it’s easier today than ever.

All the tools you’ll need for sharing your content are as close as your smartphone, tablet, or computer. All you’ve got to do is use them consistently. Develop a plan that works for you and stick to it.

Follow this advice and become a socially lean, mean link-building machine in no time.

And one other quick thing. If you’ve got a small marketing budget, and are looking for ways to increase traffic to your site, be sure to check out these awesome white hat link building techniques.
