Properly using flowers to coordinate the color and style of your wedding can save you a few headaches and some money too! Learn what's right for you..

Planning a wedding is overwhelming, and there are countless details to consider. One of the essential elements of your wedding décor is flowers, but as a DIY bride, you may be wondering: Is it necessary that all my wedding flowers match?

As beautiful as they are, wedding flowers come at a hefty price, even if you choose to DIY them. With so many decisions, it’s essential to narrow down your options and try not to overspend.

Of course, a professional floral designer can match your color scheme; however, this isn’t always necessary or cost-effective.

This article will explore whether your wedding bouquets and arrangements must match completely.

We’ll look at how different shades and styles can complement each other for a unique and stylish floral display that won’t hurt your budget.

Let’s Start By Breaking It Down

Wedding flowers can be divided into two parts, personal flowers and floral decor for the ceremony and reception.

Personal flowers are the bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages the wedding party and others will carry or wear. These flowers are typically chosen to match or complement the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s tuxes or suits.

Floral décor includes centerpieces, aisle decorations, archways, and other arrangements that you use to decorate the ceremony and reception venues.

Do Personal Flowers Have To Match?

No, personal wedding flowers do not have to match. You can choose different shades of the same flower or a completely different flower for your bouquets and boutonnieres.

For example, you could choose white lilies for the bridal bouquet and white roses for the bridesmaid bouquets and the groomsmen’s boutonnieres.

You could choose to vary the bouquet styles, such as a round, cascading, or hand-tied bouquet for the bridal bouquet and bridesmaid bouquets.

The key is to include a common thread throughout the bouquets and boutonnieres that ties everything together. This could be as simple as using the same type of flower in each bouquet or selecting a neutral color or accent in each bouquet or boutonniere.

For example, classic and elegant white, ivory, and cream-colored flowers work beautifully together and can be used in any bouquet or floral arrangement. No matter your color palette, you can’t go wrong with using neutral-colored flowers.

This is especially true when incorporating the color blue into your floral arrangements because there are few blue flowers to choose from.

If blue is part of your wedding color scheme, and you’re not finding a good match in fresh flowers, consider combining neutral white shades with baby blue eucalyptus, blue star thistle, or navy blue ribbon as accents in all your bouquets and arrangements.

It’s a striking combination that’s beautiful and cost-effective.

Do Wedding Decor Flowers Have To Match?

The flowers you use in your wedding decor also do not have to match. You can mix and match different shades of the same flower or use different types of flowers in your wedding color palette for your wedding centerpieces, aisle decorations, and other floral bouquets you may choose to include.

If you want a cohesive look, you can match your wedding flowers with the colors and style of your wedding theme. This is a great way to create visual appeal to tie together all the elements of your big day.

It’s the option I recommend to many of the DIY brides I work with.

It’s the option I recommend to many of the DIY brides I work with.

Again, the key here is to have something that acts as a common thread, like a neutral color or accent, to tie everything together.

Many options available will work when it comes to matching or complementing your wedding flowers, as you can see.

The Benefits of Matching Wedding Flowers

Matching wedding flowers will create a unified look for your special day and add an extra layer of elegance and sophistication to your event.

A more significant benefit might be that it helps a DIY bride save money. You can often buy in bulk, at much better prices, using the same flower type.

This is especially helpful if you’re on a tight budget and need to keep costs down.

The Disadvantages of Matching Wedding Flowers

Matching wedding flowers can be time-consuming for a DIYer and may require extra effort to ensure everything is consistent.

Additionally, it can be challenging to find the exact shade or type of flower you’re looking for.

Here’s What I Recommend

This question sparks conversation because everyone has their own opinion on this subject.

In my opinion, matching your wedding flowers is not a requirement. It can, however, help create a unified look for your wedding day.

If a unified look is what you want, then by all means, go for it. If an eclectic look appeals to you more, that’s the direction you should take.

My advice is to do what makes you happy. When you do, everything else will fall into place.

Ultimately, if you are the one paying the bill, you should be the one to decide.
